Stumbled across something very interesting indeed. :-t
Trams which run with no overhead wires and no contact with a third rail or diesel unit! Its called PRIMOVE and works on the principles of electrical induction using magnetic fields.

A video is available at the bottom. A very interesting development as stringing up catenary can be a problem, costly and cause problems for high vehicles. There are also a whole host of other energy saving strategies as well- important for rail vehicles because their biggest cost for an extra journey appears to be the amount of electricity it uses.
Negative people... have a problem for every solution. Posts are commentary and are not necessarily endorsed by RAIL Back on Track or its members.

The Gold Coast Light Rail must use this technology as a minimum.  No overhead wires for people to complain about.!! Run into!!
