Sunshine Coast Line : Delays for NOVEMBER 2014

November delays thus far ... to SC commuters.
This is my 40th month of detailed daily data recording.

On Monday 23 June 2014, the Queensland Premier, the Hon Campbell Newman announced that the No. 1 issue to arise out of the Sunshine Coast Community Cabinet meeting held at the Maroochydore High School on Sunday 22 June 2014, was the Sunshine Coast rail line upgrade.

Later in the afternoon the Qld. Premier was interviewed. This is what he said;
"But the single biggest one that we heard yesterday was that people want this rail infrastructure upgrade for the North Coast railway line, and we've taken that on board."
He continued ... "We will pencil that one down as one of the big ticket infrastructure items that we have to deliver around this State."

It is subject to a mandate from the people of Queensland at the next state election due in March 2015, to sell and lease assets worth some $33.6 billion and to to release $8.6 billion for infrastructure spending throughout the State. Rail duplication from Beerburrum to Nambour is in the running for that spend.
We were supposed to find out in SEPTEMBER 2014 (last month) what that spend may be.
...this did not occur, announcement has been delayed. Hoping it's because of ARTC funding proposal to get duplication 'across the line' through to Nambour

The times reported below do not take into account the 3 minutes and 59 second allowance that QR's service contract to TRANSLink allows.
A Sunshine Coast, Rosewood or Gold Coast train e.g. can be up to 5 minutes and 59 seconds late and still considered statistically to be 'on-time'.
All times shown below are actual arrival times, all times taken from when train becomes stationary, and before doors open.
NO times are rounded up.

Under my system, early arrival times at destinations are actually subtracted from the TTL (total time lost) figure,
in addition, arrival times less than 2 minutes late are NOT added to these figures.
Only when services are 2 minutes late or more, will the TTL figure increase.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
I believe that Queensland Rail do a superb job given the extreme infrastructure limitations on the Sunshine Coast line.
Our 2 new train services may have longer express legs (from 9 to 14 stations) - but they take just as much time (Roma St to Nambour) as our other shorter express leg services.

The major factor required to permanently improve the line is rail duplication to Nambour, and, at a cost benefit ratio of 2.285, it's great value for money.
Astonishingly, rail congestion between Caboolture and Nambour was identified as "a major overall impediment" to the ENTIRE 1669 km North Coast Line from Brisbane to Cairns.
Also astonishingly, 42% of our daily train services are in fact rail buses (Caboolture to Nambour), 26 per day - 13 (40.63%) northbound and 13 (43.33%) southbound.
These buses traverse the road network acting as trains due to the freight shared congestion of the predominately single track line.

Is it more reliable?  Short answer is yes, it is. Massive improvement to my services based upon these statistics.

Arrived Palmwoods 102 minutes late 

All trains suspended network wide after storms and flash floods created multiple major issues across the public transport sector at peak hour.

Flash floods closed roads and stopped buses whilst traffic volumes (and accidents) exacerbated the impacts.
Fortitude Valley suffered water over the tracks causing QR to shut down the power for safety reasons, thus stopping the network through the CBD, including the Airport line.
A direct lightning strike at Yeerongpilly stopped all Gold Coast and Beenleigh services.
A tree brought down overhead wires at Banyo cutting off the Shorncliffe line, this also affected bus services.
A roof blown off a house landed on the tracks at Nundah and brought down the overhead power lines with it, cutting off the Caboolture and Sunshine Coast lines.

Bus companies were unable to provide immediate services due to flash floods, closed roads and traffic volumes, leaving QR with no choice but to advise commuters to find alternative transport home.
For those from Ipswich, the Gold or Sunshine Coasts - it was a big ask.

My rail trip was abandoned. A work colleague borrowed a company vehicle and we car-pooled home via Albion, Caboolture and Palmwoods, along with 2 others.
I arrived at Palmwoods (via car) at 8:30pm, some 102 minutes later than normal.
Buses were later slated to run from the CBD to Geebung for Caboolture and Sunshine Coast commuters who would then catch a north-bound train home.
I am at this time, unaware of their arrival times. {EDIT: Arrival time for Palmwoods confirmed by commuter as 10:00pm}

Arrived Palmwoods 57 minutes late 

All trains suspended through Central station and the city after storms with high winds and severe hail, alongside flash floods created multiple major issues across the public transport sector at peak hour.
The storm was the second to sweep through Brisbane within 8 days.
Driving rain and hail the size of tennis balls caused havoc to the rail network with flooding (again) in Fortitude Valley and tress and wires down all over the place.

At time of writing, limited train shuttles are running between Ferny Grove and Mitchelton, Albion and Caboolture, Albion and Shorncliffe and Caboolture and Nambour.

My rail trip was abandoned. A Palmwoods bound commuter borrowed a company vehicle and we car-pooled home.
I arrived at Palmwoods station (via car) at 7:45pm, some 57 minutes later than normal.
I was one of the lucky one's.
